Hey, I’m Jess.
I live in Wellington, New Zealand. I live with my cats Pippi & Tink, my lovely husband, Steve, and our daughter, Leila.
When I’m not looking after said small person, I write fiction (fantasy mostly), and work part time as a software tester. I’m trying to get published. Slowly getting there. I like to think of myself as being at the journeyman stage of this apprenticeship.
Other things that keep me busy include: photography, reading, knitting, and hiking in gorgeous NZ bush.
I love jazz. I studied it briefly at Massey’s Jazz school, but realised I am by no stretch of the imagination a performer. So instead I play to the birds and the neighbours from our lovely perch up in the bush that looks down to the harbour. I have been known to make music on the piano, guitar, tin whistle, accordion and the mighty, mighty nose flute.
I know a little Italian. A miniscule amount of French. Swear words in Dutch.
I love old stuff: typewriters, cameras, fountain pens & old computer games.
I have a massive tarot deck collection, and I blog about reading cards at Herself’s Tarot Notebook.
I love books by John Bellairs and Haruki Murakami, Steve’s Thai cooking, long days with nothing to do, staying home when it’s raining, a glass of red wine, lemons, and anything sour.
I regularly microblog at discombobulated.micro.blog and instagram craft stuff under the same name (herselfnz). I am a sporadic tweeter. I’m currently taking a bit of a break from writing game reviews, but if you are curious,
they’re posted under my own name (Jess Nickelsen) at NZGamer.com. I am slowly trying to recover and repost these after NZGamer.com closed its doors at the end of 2017.
P.S. If you know me in real life, please leave a comment and say hi. Hi!
