The problem with not having been pregnant before is you really don’t know what it’s like to go into labour, so you have no idea if the weird aches and twinges are innocent or the early stages of something bigger. After going round to Jeremy & Megumi’s last night for a lamb vindaloo (listened to Sebadoh, the Lemonheads, and Bowie’s Pinups), I woke up this morning, early, and couldn’t go back to sleep due to some back pain / pelvic weirdness.
There was one other sign. I won’t go into it here. Some details are best left unsaid. But when you see it, it generally means things are coming along, though “coming along” can mean labour in a few hours or a few days.
The thing I’m most confused about at this stage is that I’m not experiencing anything like the contractions I imagine. I thought my whole belly area would tense up painfully, or I’d get shooting pain, etc. This is more like waves of period pain, accompanied by the pelvic weirdness (heaviness, but like something’s happening), that alternates with just feeling normal.
I’m still trying to decide whether I should call my parents and give them the head’s-up. They live about five hours’ drive away, and wanted me to let them know when we go to the hospital, so they can head down. I don’t want to get anyone too excited, especially if things are still a few days off… but here comes another wave again, in my lower back. Maybe I will ring them…
